Pat Almond Memorial Competitions

Pat Almond Memorial Challenge: CASTLES, PUDDINGS AND A POET! Derwent Valley BRIDGE Community Library is running three competitions to win prizes to be presented by the ‘Barnsley Bard’ Ian McMillan at a special evening of entertainment in the autumn. The Pat Almond Memorial Challenge is an annual event set up to celebrate the life of community activist, local councillor and teacher, Pat Almond. There are different challenges for different age groups. If you are aged between 5 and 7 years, can you paint a picture of Scarborough Castle? If so, we would love to have your entry on A4 paper please. We are asking 8 to 10 year olds to write a poem or limerick about a Yorkshire Pudding. If you are aged between 11 and 16 years, we would like you to write a poem about Scarborough in six verses in the style of Ian McMillan’s poem about Barnsley, ‘Nine Pieces of Gold’. This is probably the toughest challenge so if you want some inspiration then go to YouTube where you can hear Ian McMillan reading the poem.
Information about the competitions has been circulated to all local primary schools and secondary schools in the Scarborough and Pickering area and you can pick up more information and flyers from the Community Library at 3 Pickering Road, West Ayton. Entries have to be in by July 16th for the 11 – 18 year old category and by July 20th for the other two categories. Entries can be submitted via your school or handed in at the library. Please make sure that you put your name, age, school and a contact phone number and address on the back of your entry
The prize winners for the picture competition will be chosen from a shortlist which will be on display in the library so everyone coming into the library will be able to vote for the ones they like best. The awards and prizes will be presented by Ian McMillan on October 1st when he and Luke Carver Goss will be coming to provide an evening of “music, poetry and glee” on Saturday October 1st in Ayton Village Hall. £10 per ticket available from 23rd August from DVB.

Ian McMillan is a poet, writer, broadcaster and media presenter. He writes regularly for the Yorkshire Post, publishes his own poetry, attends many literary festivals across the UK and appears regularly on The One Show, BBC Breakfast and The Verb. He is often referred to as the ‘Barnsley Bard’.
