Music, Glee and Delight

Derwent Valley BRIDGE were thrilled to secure the services of Ian McMillan (poet and wordsmith) and Luke Carver Goss (musician) for the annual Pat Almond Memorial “Lecture” this year, which sold out in advance of the night. Pat Almond, who was a well loved  teacher and West Ayton Parish Councillor, is remembered every year at this event.  We invite a well-known personality to come and talk to us and present the prizes to local children that have taken part in competitions held in the summer. The theme of the memorial competitions are usually linked in some way to our speaker and to Pat. The winners this year were: Jennifer Starkey, aged 6, who painted a beautiful  picture of Scarborough Castle in silhouette; Tilly Dixon, aged 9, who wrote a poem about Yorkshire Pudding; and Hollie Emerson whose poem was about Scarborough in the style of ‘Nine Pieces of Gold’ – Ian McMillan’s poem about Barnsley.  Our theme this year was, of course, Yorkshire and the poetry and music linked it even more to Pat. Ian read out the poems to the audience,  in his fabulous Yorkshire delivery!  This went down a storm.  Ian and Luke had everyone singing and laughing along with their humour,  banter, music  and poetry.  The audience went home smiling, after a cracking good night.  He even made up a song on the spot to include Popeye, sausages, and  cabbages.  How do we follow this next year? We say that every year! Many thanks to West Ayton Parish Council for sponsoring this event in honour of Pat, and to everyone that helped make the evening a success.
