Derwent Valley BRIDGE were thrilled to secure the services of Ian McMillan (poet and wordsmith) and Luke Carver Goss (musician) for the annual Pat Almond Memorial \u201cLecture\u201d this year, which sold out in advance of the night. Pat Almond, who was a well loved \u00a0teacher and West Ayton Parish Councillor, is remembered every year at this event.\u00a0 We invite a well-known personality to come and talk to us and present the prizes to local children that have taken part in competitions held in the summer. The theme of the memorial\u00a0competitions are usually linked in some way to our speaker and to Pat. The winners this year were: Jennifer Starkey, aged 6, who painted a beautiful\u00a0 picture of Scarborough Castle in silhouette; Tilly Dixon, aged 9, who wrote a poem about Yorkshire Pudding; and Hollie Emerson\u00a0whose\u00a0poem was about Scarborough in the style of ‘Nine Pieces\u00a0of Gold’ – Ian McMillan\u2019s poem about Barnsley.\u00a0 Our theme this year was, of course, Yorkshire and the poetry and music linked it even more\u00a0to Pat. Ian read out the poems to the audience,\u00a0 in his fabulous Yorkshire delivery! \u00a0This went down a storm.\u00a0 Ian and Luke had everyone singing and laughing along with their humour,\u00a0 banter, music\u00a0 and poetry.\u00a0 The audience went home smiling, after a cracking good night. \u00a0He even made up a song on the spot to include Popeye, sausages, and\u00a0 cabbages.\u00a0 How do we follow this next year? We\u00a0say that every year! Many thanks to West Ayton Parish Council for sponsoring this event in honour of Pat, and to everyone that helped make the evening a success.<\/p>\n
